Mangrove Restoration Project

Young mangroveMRDF has an active mangrove restoration effort on the outer side of its jetty, facing Largo Sound.  The restoration effort, using the Riley Encased Method (REM) was initiated in the late 1990’s and continues to this day.  The  methodology has progressively improved and we replaced seedlings lost to storms or erosion with the new improved process. Currently, over 20 mangrove seedlings have flourished and become sturdier young trees, stabilizing that shoreline and adding habitat.
